Two recent novels by young West Africans rely chiefly on the durable notion of Africa as a spawning ground for bestiality. I picked up Uzodinma Iweala's Beasts of No Nation last week nudged by a memory of the positive press the book got in late 2005. The story of an African (no country is named) boy's involvement with a group of guerilla fighters during his country's civil war. The above is from an essay by Uzodinma Iweala, author of the much talked about debut novel, Beasts of No Nation, told in the voice of an African child soldier, Agu. The story in the book referring to his father coming in for “show and tell” depicts his relationship to what would have been his central guide and role model for life. It feels like a long short story to me, partly because of its single, straightforward plot and limited cast of characters. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. With various Christian groups violently arguing over theological teachings, he used the Book of Revelation to support his contention that the beast is no longer Rome but demonically deceived Christians.
